Dehradun, 24 Aug: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today virtually addressed the historic Hilljatra festival organised in Pithoragarh from the Chief Minister’s residence. Extending greetings to the people of the state, particularly those of Pithoragarh, he described Hilljatra as a symbol of Uttarakhand’s faith, belief and rich cultural traditions. He announced the beautification of Baba Gangnath temple at Jakhnai village in Pithoragarh, underscoring the government’s commitment to preserving religious and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister said that Hilljatra, celebrated for over five centuries, has become a distinct identity of Pithoragarh’s culture and traditions. He noted that the festival reflects not only devotion and faith but also the struggles and practices of rural life based on agriculture and animal husbandry. He emphasised that Hilljatra is more than a religious or traditional event, as it connects people to their roots and reminds them of the ideals and valour of their ancestors. He added that the arrival of Lakhia Bhoot, a companion of Lord Shiva, during the festival is considered a symbol of prosperity and happiness.
Dhami stressed that the government is committed to ensuring that traditional festivals, fairs and rituals retain their original identity and cultural essence for future generations. Calling upon the youth, he said festivals like Hilljatra are vital in acquainting them with their culture and traditions, and urged them to contribute to the government’s resolve of strengthening Uttarakhand’s heritage. Concluding his address, he wished that Hilljatra would bring happiness, prosperity and peace to all.
