On 24 December, a complaint was lodged at the Nehru Colony police station by Kishore Uniyal, an accountant of Premier Motors Pvt Ltd, located on the Haridwar Bypass Road, Ajabpur Kala. He informed the police that, on the night of 24 December, unknown thieves had broken into the showroom and stolen cash worth lakhs of rupees kept in the cupboard in the accountant’s office. In view of the seriousness of the matter, on the instructions of SSP Ajay Singh, a case was immediately registered under Sections 380/457 IPC.
Several police teams were formed to investigate. The teams inspected the incident site closely and found that it was on the ground floor of the under construction building of Mahindra Showroom, where no CCTV camera was installed for security reasons. There is an open space from both the sides which has no doors. Also, no security guard had been deputed at the spot from where the money had been stolen. The cupboard was not a safe but a normal cupboard made from thin gauge sheets.
As many as 150 labourers from different states were also working in the under-construction building. Thus, in the absence of any help from CCTV cameras, the police teams started verification of suspicious persons by interrogating the labourers. Along with the verification process, the informer system was activated. On 25 December, an informer told the police that a habitual criminal Deepak Kumar, who has been jailed in several incidents of theft in the past, was suddenly spending a lot of money in a suspicious manner. The informer also reported that several bundles of Rs 500 notes denomination have been seen with him. Consequently, the suspect, Deepak Kumar, son of Ashok Kumar, resident of Chisopani, was arrested for questioning near Daudwala. The search of his pocket resulted in recovery of Rs 1.03 lakhs. He was unable to tell the police about the source of the money recovered.
After strict interrogation, the accused admitted that, on the night of 23/24 December, he had stolen the money from the Mahindra showroom. He had kept the remaining stolen money hidden at his sister’s house in Badkali. After this, the remaining amount was recovered from his sister’s house. Rs 20,754 had been already spent by him on drugs and other purchases. Police investigation revealed that the arrested accused had also committed theft in the past and gone to jail. The accused has been produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.
