DEHRADUN, 29 Nov: Deaths in road accidents because two-wheeler riders do not wear helmets has become a matter of concern for the Uttarakhand Police. Although people are well-off enough to buy expensive two-wheelers, they lack the good sense to wear helmets.

In 2018 till September, 165 two-wheeler accidents have taken place in Doon, because of which 75 persons have died because they were not wearing helmets. This is enough to show how much the laws are being followed.

Under the law, all those riding two-wheelers are supposed to wear helmets. But the streets of Doon are evidence that the laws are not just flouted but with impunity. There is total lack of awareness of the dangers involved. Of the 75 deaths, a large number are children.

The officials of the Transport Department have initiated a drive to nab offenders outside schools, when the children arrive or leave. They are being booked for offences such as underage driving, not wearing helmets, not having the requisite documents, and triple riding, etc. Their parents are also being pulled up for their negligence. It is being pointed out that accidents destroy the lives of entire families.

According to ARTO Rashmi Pant that parents are responsible for giving two-wheelers to underage children, or not ensuring they wear helmets. They would be provided counseling to make them aware of the dangers. She said the drive would continue.
