Dehradun, 9 Sep: SPIC MACAY hosted a spell-binding performance by the renowned Indian Classical Guitar player, Dr Kamala Shankar, at Vivekanada School, here, today.
During her circuit in Dehradun, she performed at various institutes, including Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1, Special Home, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 2, The Doon Girls’ School, Vivekananda School and Doon Business School.
She was accompanied by Shubh Maharaj on Tabla and Nirmal Saini on Shankar Guitar.
Kamala began her recital with the reposeful alap in Raga Shyam Kalyan. This was followed by Ahir Bhairav and Yaman. Her touch, strokes, glides, and subsequent production of tonal effects point to her sound training. Her rhythmic and melodic vitality shone throughout her performance.

Kamala Shankar started learning music at the tender age of six and is the first lady artist to do a doctorate in guitar playing from Banaras Hindu University. She is well known for her tremendous control and versatility of the instrument and has an exceptional natural ability to play the ‘Gayaki Ang.’ Among her favorite ragas are ‘Yaman’, ‘Gorakh Kalyan’, and ‘Bhagyashree’. Born in Tanjore District of Tamil Nadu, she is the daughter of Dr R Shankar, a senior medical practitioner of Varanasi.
