Dehradun, 5 Sep: Leading author of English language in India, and Padma Shri awardee Ruskin Bond, who is a resident of Mussoorie has shared a very sweet message on the occasion of Teachers’ Day which falls on 5th September every year.
Bond laments the fact that Teachers’ Day comes once a year and feels that the teachers deserve more than one day of recognition in the course of a year as they do so much for the children. He says that his teachers did so much for him too when he was child and a student. He remembers that in those days, schools and in particular the boarding schools were not very soft towards children and they used to punish children for their mistakes. He adds that most of the teachers in those days were men. Bond said that he is much relieved to find that now most teachers are women and that makes it easier for the students. While children do need some amount of disciplining now and then, but the women teachers can be good disciplinarians too.
Bond laments the fact that classrooms are getting bigger now with even up to a hundred students per class and wonders how the teachers can manage them. He remembers that when he used to go to school more than fifty years ago, classes had only around 15 to 20 kids. It was easier for the teachers to know each student much better and give individual attention to every student which is very difficult to ensure now. Hence there is a need to appreciate the teachers as many good teachers do still encourage the children to read and write and recreate, which is wonderful.
Bond has greeted teachers from across the country on this day and has stressed that they deserve huge respect from society for the role they play in grooming the children.
