Dehradun, 5 Oct: Khadi has long represented Gandhian principles and holds a pivotal place in history and culture. Now, Doon University has taken a positive step by introducing ‘Wear Khadi’ Thursdays. Vice Chancellor Dr Surekha Dangwal has initiated the Khadi movement within the institution by personally embracing Khadi. This action served as a driving force, encouraging others to participate in this initiative and wear Khadi every Thursday at Doon University. It not only promotes Khadi but also a statement of support for sustainability, craftsmanship, and the empowerment of local communities.

Khadi, closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi, is a hand-spun and hand-woven natural fabric. Its inception at Sabarmati Ashram in 1917-18 marked a turning point. While traditionally made from cotton, it can also incorporate silk or wool. Khadi’s evolution mirrors shifts in society, economics and fashion. Pre-independence, it symbolised self-sufficiency and non-violent resistance, championed by Gandhi. It was a fabric of frugality and self-reliance. Post-independence, Khadi modernised while preserving its essence. Organisations like Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) were established to regulate production and support artisans. It entered mainstream fashion, gaining global recognition for its sustainability. In the 2000s, mechanisation improved efficiency. Khadi became a focal point in the sustainable fashion movement, resonating with eco-conscious consumers. Throughout, Khadi remained a symbol of self-reliance, sustainability and cultural heritage.

Introducing Khadi in the University not only aligns with sustainable and ethical fashion practices but also fosters a deeper appreciation for cultural and historical significance. It promotes a sense of responsibility towards the environment and local economies, preparing students to be socially-conscious citizens. Khadi’s natural, pure, and organic properties tend to evoke a sense of inner satisfaction and a profound connection to the environment. This unique quality of Khadi makes it a special choice for many individuals.

Khadi’s natural, pure, and organic qualities provide a deep sense of satisfaction and a profound connection to the environment. It stands as an eco-conscious choice, with lower environmental impact compared to synthetic textiles. Doon University has set an example by embracing Khadi and it can inspire other educational institutions, too, to adopt sustainable practices in their curriculum.
