Dehradun, 2 Jan: Taxi, Truck and Bus Drivers have taken to the streets to protest against the new laws being made by the Central Government regarding hit and run cases. This has crippled transport services in Uttarakhand with truck drivers, taxi and auto and even bus drivers joining the strike against the new law related to hit and run crime. Garhwal Vikram Tempo Welfare Association today unanimously decided not to operate autos and Vikrams today and tomorrow as a result of which, people are facing huge problems in commuting and a large number of people were stranded at various places including the ISBT and Railway Station due to the strike.
It may be recalled that yesterday and today too, the auto and Vikram drivers did not operate the vehicles and also did not allow those willing to operate their vehicles. Haridwar, Dehradun and Rishikesh were among the worst affected cities as a result of the strike. The people were seen travelling on foot with luggage on their heads. When a few drivers tried to drive, they were stopped by other drivers of the union. The drama continued on the road the whole day. During the protest, drivers demanded withdrawal of the law.
State President of All Over Transport Welfare Association, Kunwar Rao Akhlaq today asserted that the truck drivers are still on strike under the banner of All India Motor Congress. He asserted that in case the government does not withdraw the provision of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakhs in hit and run cases, the strike will continue. He claimed that in Uttarakhand alone, more than five thousand vehicles will remain out of service.
Not only this, as a result of strike by the truckers, rush of vehicles was seen at various petrol pumps in the state including in Dehradun and Mussoorie for refuelling.
More than 150 vehicles of Indian Oil Corporation are located in Thithola supply petrol, diesel and kerosene in Garhwal division. Similarly, Hindustan Petroleum also supplies about 100 vehicles of diesel, petrol and kerosene in the state.
The drivers of all three depots have gone on strike by blocking the road to protest against the hit and run law. Drivers say that until the central government announces the repeal of this new law, they will not return to work. With the drivers of IOC, HP and Bharat Gas on strike, oil crisis may deepen in Uttarakhand since the supply of oil and gas from all three depots has completely stopped.
Meanwhile the government has claimed that the new laws are aimed at helping the accident victims rather than harassing the drivers.
