Dehradun, Apr 23: As part of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision and model of governance, the state is all set to become a one trillion dollar economy by 2027 with a detailed phase-wise strategy underway and a clear roadmap to achieve the target, Dr KV Raju, Financial Advisor to the Chief Minister, said here today.
Speaking as the pre-conference keynote speaker on the eve of the Annual Conference of Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand Economic Association (UPUEA), Raju, who has been closely associated with the government on economic issues, said that following the Uttar Pradesh Global Investment Summit, as many as 19,000 MoUs had been signed by the government to attract about Rs 34 lakh crores in the state.
Stating that the government has taken several reformative steps towards fostering a pro-industrial development ecosystem, Raju said that the ultimate objective of the government is to create job opportunities, boost growth rate and create adequate infrastructure and enabling environment in the state. Emphasising that education would play a key role in making Uttar Pradesh a $1 trillion economy, Raju added that, while government was giving top priority to transforming education, as many as five state-of-the-art new health cities are being created in the state.
Another keynote speaker, Professor Pramod Kumar, took up another important issue of land tenancy reforms across the country as these in their current shape are detrimental to economic transformation. He suggested digitisation of land records with clear titles and working towards other aspects of land reforms.
Professor D K Nauriyal said there is tremendous scope for economic development in agriculture, MSME and tourism in Uttarakhand. Professor HC Purohit focussed on women-led industrial development and capacity building for youth to make them self-reliant and take the nation to a 5 trillion dollar economy.
Leading economists from across the country are gathering at Doon University as part of the Annual Conference of Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand Economic Association (UPUEA) to brainstorm on regional economic development of the two states, similarities of challenges and opportunities and explore actionable collaborative strategies towards a roadmap.
“In the conference, the experts are making presentations and holding crucial discussions on issues of economic growth, employment, social sector growth and interrogate development in the context of sustainable development goals,” said Professor RP Mamgain, Head of the Department of Economics.
The two-day conference is going to start tomorrow with experts from both the states and across the country making deliberations.
He emphasised that while both the states have taken their own roadmaps of development, there are common challenges and opportunities that need to be jointly discussed and leveraged for promoting inclusive and sustainable development in both the states.
“Towards this end, about 250 senior economists, policy makers, researchers and young scholars from various parts of the country and students shall present their papers at the conference,” Professor Dangwal added.
The three broad themes of the conference include (a) Growth, structural change and employment in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, (b) Emerging imperatives in social sector growth, and (c) Interrogating development in the context of sustainable development. Prof Mamgain is also the Organising Secretary of the Conference. He said that the Conference will provide an exclusive opportunity to young research scholars and teachers in Economics to hone their teaching and research skills under the session on “Catching Young Minds in Economics”. Eminent economist, Professor Nagesh Kumar, Director, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, New Delhi, is the Conference President.
