Dehradun, 24 Aug: In an initiative blending education with empowerment, Welham Boys’ School, in collaboration with Aasraa Trust and supported by the Bindi Foundation, launched Roshni Ki Udaan — a unique project aimed at introducing girls from underserved communities to the fundamentals of solar technology.

The inaugural session was held at the GGIC Shelter Home on Rajpur Road, where students from Welham Boys’ School conducted a hands-on workshop with girls supported by Aasraa. Together, they assembled solar-powered lamps in an atmosphere charged with curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

Welham Boys’ School exemplifies a deep-rooted dedication to community outreach, going beyond academic excellence to foster social awareness and impactful engagement among students. This commitment is manifested through hands-on community projects under the Round Square framework— where students collaborate with local communities to construct vital infrastructure like classrooms, sanitation facilities, and clean water systems, using locally sourced materials to ensure sustainability and ownership. Welham Boys’ also collaborates with NGOs to deepen students’ understanding of grassroots realities. Notably, a workshop on rural social development with Bindi International fostered awareness of rural women’s issues—like solar engineering, education, health, and hygiene—while nurturing empathetic leadership among students as “social changemakers”.

Founded in 2009, Aasraa Trust is a Dehradun-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to uplifting children and youth from marginalised backgrounds across Uttarakhand. The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from the girls, who were guided by hands-on training by Welham Boys’ students in building the solar lamps. The event not only imparted technical skills but also served as a platform for meaningful interaction and mutual learning. Representatives from the Bindi Foundation lauded the initiative, highlighting its role in promoting gender equity through hands-on, skill-based education.

Staff, students, and volunteers from all partnering organisations appreciated the event as a significant step toward sustainable development and social inclusion. Roshni Ki Udaan stands as a shining example of how collaborative efforts can illuminate lives and pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future.
