Nainital, 20 June: The Foundation Day of the State of West Bengal was celebrated at Raj Bhavan, Nainital, on Thursday.
It was attended by Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) along with the people of West Bengal residing in Uttarakhand.
Cultural programmes and dances based on their culture were presented by the people of West Bengal.
On the occasion, the Governor congratulated all the residents of Bengal present on the State Foundation Day. The Governor said that the land of Bengal has been the centre of mass awakening of independence as well as heritage, art, dance and culture. The holy land of Bengal has been the birthplace of great personalities like Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda. Bengal has been the centre of the Indian freedom movement and has been one of the great artistic and intellectual centres of India.
Lt Gen Singh said that the Centre has decided to celebrate the foundation day of every state in every state, which realises the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. Such events provide an opportunity to know the art and culture of each other’s states and also unity in diversity reflects the rich heritage. This new tradition of celebrating the foundation day of states in all the Raj Bhavans of the country is a unique initiative for the unity of the country.
First Lady Gurmeet Kaur, residents of West Bengal Sharmila Mitra, Panchali Sen, Krishna Dutta, Tuhina Mitra, Kohina Mitra, etc., were present.
