Dehradun, 13 Feb: Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya has raised serious questions over the ‘deteriorating’ law & order situation in the state and in Dehradun in particular. In a statement issued today, Arya reminded that Dehradun, the State capital, has witnessed five murders within the past fifteen days. He asserted that this is not an ordinary statistic but a grave question mark on the prevailing law & order situation.

Arya observed that when the capital of the state itself becomes unsafe, who will guarantee the security of ordinary citizens across the state. He claimed that the criminals in the state appear emboldened, while the government and the administration seem to be mute spectators.

Arya stated that the repeated occurrence of heinous crimes such as murder clearly indicates that either the police machinery is under pressure or there is a visible laxity in its functioning. He said the fear of law appears to have diminished among criminals and the intelligence and surveillance systems have evidently weakened.

The Leader of Opposition observed that five murders in merely fifteen days in the capital city should serve as a serious warning to any government. He emphasised that the matter is not merely about statistics but about the safety and security of every family residing in the State capital.

He demanded that the government immediately undertake a high-level review of all these cases and initiate a special drive for effective crime control. Arya further emphasised on the need to strengthen police patrolling and bolster the intelligence apparatus. Transparency, he said, is equally essential, and the government must apprise the public of the action taken so far in each of these cases.

Arya warned that, in case strict and effective measures are not adopted in time, the public confidence in the system will be severely shaken. He maintained that the state can be considered secure only when its capital is secure and asserted that this is the time for decisive action, not for mere statements.
