Dehradun, 23 Feb: Haridwar MP and former Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has once again expressed concern over the state’s law and order situation. In a statement given by him during an informal interaction with media persons, today, Rawat said that the law & order situation has deteriorated, though it is not yet beyond control.  He said that the rising number of criminal incidents is certainly a matter of worry. He appealed to the government to take security issues seriously and adopt effective measures.

Rawat observed that, while the security situation has not yet derailed, the pressure is increasing. He reminded that incidents of murder, loot and dacoity are on the rise in Dehradun and several other districts, making vigilance by the government and administration essential.

He emphasised that the criminal incidents are not merely statistical matters but create fear and insecurity among ordinary people. In a peace-loving and religious tourism state like Uttarakhand, a rising crime graph also affects the state’s image.

Highlighting the importance of sensitive areas, Rawat said that cities such as Haridwar and Dehradun attract visitors from across the country and abroad, making strong law & order management indispensable. He urged the government to strengthen the police system and enhance surveillance in vulnerable zones.

Rawat stressed that frequent murders and other crimes are not healthy signs for the state and described them as a matter of collective shame. He added that, while political differences between the parties may exist, all the parties should cooperate with the government on law & order.

Regarding ‘demographic’ changes in the state, the Haridwar MP asserted that the issue of security must be considered above politics. Referring to the state’s formation in 2000, he said that data at the time showed a rapid increase in the minority population. He insisted that population figures should be analysed periodically.

Rawat further asserted that discussions on demography must be based on facts and official statistics. He said that when new data emerges, the reality will become clearer, but since demographic issues are sensitive, they must be addressed with the transparency and seriousness they deserve. He urged the government to maintain openness on population-related matters and to understand ongoing changes carefully.

He noted that, amid rising crime, debates on demography are also intensifying, which increases the government’s responsibility to strengthen law & order and preserve social harmony.

Expressing concern over recent murders in Dehradun, Rawat said that Uttarakhand’s identity has been peace, spirituality and harmony, which must not be weakened under any circumstances. He stressed that such incidents shake society deeply.

Rawat demanded that strict action must be taken against criminals and the fear of law must be visible. He warned that once the offenders lose fear of the law, the situation is likely to gradually worsen. He urged the government to review the security system regularly, hold police officers accountable at the district level, and expand the use of modern technology for crime prevention.

He added that crime cannot be fully controlled without public participation, stressing the importance of awareness and community cooperation. Rawat however clarified that his intention is not to criticise the government but to alert it in time. He observed that the situation can be kept tightly under control if vigilance is exercised now.
