DEHRADUN, 11 Apr: Dehradun Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam) has introduced a citizen-friendly initiative aimed at simplifying the house tax payment process. Besides this, the municipal corporation has also announced attractive rebates to encourage timely payments of House Tax. The Nigam has also streamlined the system and made both online and offline payment facilities available, enabling residents to deposit their taxes conveniently as per their preference.
In a significant relief to taxpayers, the Corporation has announced that those who deposit their house tax on time will be eligible for additional concessions. Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal shared that taxpayers making payments by April 30 for the Financial Year 2026-27 will receive an extra rebate of five per cent, over and above the existing rebate structure. However, those failing to pay within the stipulated period will attract a penalty at the rate of 12 per cent.
The Corporation has clarified that a rebate of 20 per cent is already applicable on payments made by March 31, 2027 (The current Financial Year). In addition to this, an extra five per cent rebate will be extended to those paying House Tax for FY 2026-27 by April 30 this year. This provision offers a substantial opportunity for taxpayers, particularly property owners with higher tax liabilities, to avail considerable savings that could amount to several thousand rupees.
According to official figures, nearly 1.18 lakh taxpayers were registered in Dehradun till the previous financial year. With the issuance of a revised tax list, this number is expected to increase further, thereby boosting the Corporation’s revenue base. The officials believe that the inclusion of additional properties in the new list will contribute significantly to overall collections.
Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal has appealed to the residents not to wait until the last date and to deposit their house tax well in time. Timely payment, he emphasised, will not only help citizens avail rebates but also save them from penalties.
It may be recalled that Doon Nagar Nigam’s revenue position has shown consistent improvement in recent years. In the last financial year, it recorded house tax collections of Rs 60.72 crore, the highest so far. This marks a steady rise from Rs 33 crore in 2021–22, Rs 49 crore in 2022–23, Rs 52 crore in 2023–24 and Rs 54 crore in 2024–25, reflecting growing awareness among citizens regarding tax compliance.
At the same time, the Nigam has also issued a stern warning to the tax defaulters. Those who consistently fail to deposit taxes will face strict action, including imposition of a 12 per cent penalty along with additional charges. In extreme cases, legal proceedings and sealing of properties may also be undertaken.
The Municipal Corporation has reiterated that enhanced tax collection is essential for strengthening urban infrastructure and ensuring sustained development. Funds generated through house tax are utilised for key municipal services such as road maintenance, sanitation, drainage systems, street lighting and other basic amenities.
With the introduction of online payment facilities, the residents can now deposit their dues from the comfort of their homes, while offline counters continue to function as before to cater to those less familiar with digital platforms, particularly senior citizens. The initiative is expected to benefit a wide cross-section of taxpayers and foster greater participation in the city’s development by encouraging timely payment of house tax.
