Mussoorie, 21 Apr: Land subsidence and widening cracks in the roads in the Landour area here have heightened the concerns of local residents. Given the continuously deteriorating situation in the region, residents have demanded that the administration take swift action on a priority basis. According to locals, the cracks appearing on the road are widening day by day. Rainwater and sewage are seeping through these cracks, undermining the foundations of nearby buildings and thereby increasing the risk of a major disaster. The situation is not limited merely to the roads; rather, it raises serious questions regarding the overall geological stability of the entire region.
It has been reported that following the incidents of land subsidence witnessed in Joshimath and Himachal Pradesh in 2023, a survey and technical study were also conducted in this region. That report had identified the Landour area as geologically sensitive; yet, despite this assessment, no concrete steps toward a permanent solution have been taken to date. Residents of the area state that the continuously widening cracks and the looming threat of land subsidence have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among them. They fear that, if remedial measures are not implemented in a timely manner, it could result in a significant loss of life and property. Mussoorie Municipal Councillor Geeta Kumai, along with local residents, has demanded that the administration initiate immediate work, taking into account the previously prepared technical reports and the recommendations of experts. She emphasised that resolving this issue before the onset of the upcoming monsoon season is absolutely critical; otherwise, the situation could escalate into a severe crisis. Residents have appealed for better coordination among the government departments and for the work to be executed under the supervision of technical experts to ensure that a permanent and safe solution is achieved.
Geeta Kumai stated that the increasing land subsidence in Mussoorie’s Landour area has now evolved into a dire warning. If effective measures are not taken in a timely manner, this issue could escalate into a major crisis. She stated that she had spoken with the SDM of Mussoorie regarding this matter, who informed her that the entire issue is currently being handled at the government level and that remedial work on the subsidence-affected areas in the Landour region would commence shortly.
