Dehradun / Pauri, 10 May: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh participated in various programmes at Lansdowne during his two-day visit to Pauri district, where he interacted with serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, and military officials. During the visit, he attended a military conference and encouraged the troops while also reviewing ongoing development works and government schemes in the district.
The Governor began the programme by visiting the War Memorial, where he paid floral tributes to the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in service of the nation. He later attended a military conference organised with soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their families. The presence of Veer Naris, Veer Matas, and military families made the occasion both emotional and inspiring.

During the event, the Governor presented a special trophy to the Garhwal Rifles in recognition of its outstanding contribution and glorious military traditions. Praising the regiment’s bravery, discipline, and spirit of national service, he said that the Garhwal Rifles has remained a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the nation. He noted that the regiment has consistently displayed exceptional valour and commitment even under the most challenging circumstances.
The programme also included a special ceremony organised by the Garhwal Rifles to honour the Veer Naris of martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the country. As the Veer Naris came onto the stage, the entire auditorium echoed with applause, while soldiers, veterans, and civilians stood up in respect. The moment was deeply emotional and filled with pride, leaving everyone inspired by the spirit of sacrifice and patriotism.

Governor Gurmit Singh described Veer Naris as symbols of the nation’s strength and honour. He said that behind every soldier’s sacrifice stands the immense courage, patience, and resilience of their families, especially the Veer Naris. He added that the nation will always remain indebted to the martyrs and their families for their unparalleled contribution.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the occasion was deeply emotional and spiritually fulfilling for him. Reflecting on his 40 years of service in the Army, he remarked that his journey was possible because of the blessings of Lord Badri Vishal. He emphasised that military life represents the highest ideals of discipline, dedication, and patriotism, and that the Indian Army has always been a symbol of national pride and security.
The Governor further stated that Uttarakhand is the land of brave soldiers, where almost every family shares a connection with the armed forces. He said that the spirit of national service is deeply rooted among the youth of the state. Referring to the 139-year legacy of the Garhwal Rifles Regiment, he said the regiment is a matter of immense pride for the nation and has played a vital role in strengthening discipline, character-building, and patriotism.
During the conference, Commandant Brigadier Vinod Negi expressed gratitude to the Governor for his affection, blessings, and special attachment toward the Garhwal Rifles. He said that the Governor’s close connection with soldiers and military families greatly boosts the morale of the troops. Brigadier Negi added that the Governor’s inspiring words and guidance infused soldiers with renewed energy and motivation, encouraging them to continue serving the nation with greater dedication, discipline, and commitment.
Among those present on the occasion were District Magistrate Swati S Bhadauria, Chief Development Officer Girish Gunwant, Centre Subedar Major Nand Kishore, serving and retired soldiers, Veer Mothers, Veer Naris, and several district and military officials including DFO, Kalagarh, S Tarun, ASP Manoj Kumar Thakur, CO, Kotdwar, Niharika Semwal, CMO Shiv Mohan Shukla, SDM Shalini Maurya, BDO Ravi Saini, and Executive Engineer, PWD Lansdowne, Vivek Kumar.
