Dehradun, 12 May: International Nurses Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and fervour at the Government Doon Medical College affiliated Doon Hospital here today.
On this occasion, Health and Medical Education Minister Subodh Uniyal was the Chief Guest. He praised the invaluable contribution of the nursing community towards strengthening healthcare services.
Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Uniyal observed that the doctors, nursing officers, paramedical staff and other healthcare workers are all integral parts of the same healthcare system and that better medical services could only be ensured through mutual coordination, respect and cooperation among all sections of the health fraternity.
Recalling the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Health Minister said the sensitivity, dedication and tireless service of the nursing community had played a crucial role in saving countless lives during the crisis. He observed that every patient arriving at a hospital carries emotions shaped by “feelings, hardships and influence”, and therefore nursing services represented not merely medical treatment but also human compassion, empathy and trust.
Referring to the state’s transfer policy, Uniyal said the government is according highest priority to transparency and promised that efforts would be made to provide postings to healthcare workers in or near their home districts as far as possible.
During the programme, nursing officers placed several demands before the Health Minister, including nursing day allowance, hospital allowance and uniform allowance. Responding positively, the minister assured the gathering that necessary efforts would be made to provide uniform allowance at the earliest. He also reiterated the government’s commitment towards protecting the dignity and honour of the nursing community.
The event also witnessed colourful cultural presentations by nursing officers, with traditional hill folk music and folk dances emerging as major attractions of the programme. A demand for framing a separate nursing cadre rulebook under the Medical Education Department was also raised before the minister during the event.
