DEHRADUN, 18 Jul: Doon Library and Research Centre on Saturday hosted a special screening of the acclaimed documentary Aawargi (Wanderlust), based on the life and legacy of eminent photographer, poet, traveller, and photojournalist Kamal Joshi, paying tribute to his remarkable contribution to art, literature, photography, and environmental awareness.
The event witnessed the participation of a large number of distinguished personalities from the fields of literature, journalism, photography, cinema, environment, education, along with artists, intellectuals, students, and film enthusiasts.
Welcoming the audience Doon Library and Research Centre Programme Officer Chandrashekhar Tewari, said that Kamal Joshi was not only an outstanding photographer but also a sensitive poet, an inquisitive traveller, and a true admirer of Nature. He remarked that Joshi’s life continues to inspire younger generations and encourages society to develop a deeper sensitivity towards nature, humanity, and the world around us.
The programme was ably moderated by Geeta Gairola, who introduced the audience to Kamal Joshi’s life, his creative journey, and the background of the documentary in an engaging and insightful manner.
Following the screening, Jaidev Bhattacharya, Director and Producer of the documentary, shared his experiences of researching and making the film. He explained that despite limited resources, his objective was to bring to light those dimensions of Kamal Joshi’s life and work that deserve to be preserved for future generations. He described the documentary as not merely a biographical film, but a living record of sensitivity, love for nature, and enduring human values.
Senior litterateur Kavaljeet Kaur reflected on the emotional depth of Kamal Joshi’s poetry, its language, and his profound relationship with nature. She observed that his poems represent the very soul of his personality and that understanding his poetry is essential to understanding the man himself.
Speaking on the occasion, Nicholas Hofland described Aawargi as much more than a documentary. He called it a powerful cinematic document of memories, emotions, and a creative life, appreciating its meticulous research, artistic presentation, and emotional depth.
The screening was followed by an informal discussion over tea, during which members of the audience shared their reflections on the film and Kamal Joshi’s multifaceted personality. Participants appreciated the initiative and observed that documentaries of this kind play an important role in preserving cultural, creative, and intellectual heritage for future generations.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt tribute to Kamal Joshi and a vote of thanks to all the speakers, guests, participants, and members of the audience. The event served as a meaningful celebration of Kamal Joshi’s rich legacy, his creative contributions, and his deep commitment to nature and humanity.
