Dehradun, 23 Jul: In another major crackdown on the examination mafia under the leadership of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Pramendra Dobal, the city police have arrested an assistant professor of Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra, for allegedly leaking questions related to a semester examination of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) through a WhatsApp group before the examination.
According to the police, Examination Controller of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University, Dr Vinay Kumar Patel, had lodged a written complaint at Prem Nagar Police Station yesterday. He stated that during the University’s odd-even semester examinations, an email had been received regarding the examination conducted on 8 July, 2026, alleging that an assistant professor of Shivalik College of Engineering had shared important questions through a WhatsApp group on 3 July, 2026. After the examination, the University compared the shared questions with the actual question paper and found substantial similarities between them.
The complaint further stated that an internal inquiry committee constituted by the University also found that the assistant professor had shared questions similar to those appearing in the examination with students through the internal portal and WhatsApp before the examination. The accused, identified as Ashish Kumar Gupta, Assistant Professor at Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra, is alleged to have breached the confidentiality of the University’s examination system with the intention of giving undue advantage to students.
On the basis of the complaint, Prem Nagar Police registered an FIR under Sections 316, 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Case Crime No. 144/2026.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the SSP Dehradun directed the investigating officer to expedite the collection of evidence and take effective action against the accused. Based on the statements of witnesses, documentary evidence and other material collected during the investigation, the police today arrested Ashish Kumar Gupta.
Police said the electronic devices seized from the accused are being examined and evidence is being collected to ascertain the involvement of any other persons in the offence. Further action will be taken in accordance with the law against all those found involved in the case.
The arrested accused has been identified as Ashish Kumar Gupta, 40, Assistant Professor at Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra, and a native of Shakumbhari Vihar, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
