Natural farming in Uttarakhand holds immense potential due to the state’s traditional, low-chemical baseline, high forest cover, and strong government backing. Because over 80% of agriculture in the hilly regions is rain-fed and relies minimally on synthetic fertiliers, the state’s hill farming is often considersed “unintentionally organic”. This provides a unique, ready-made foundation for chemical-free, low-cost natural farming practices like Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF).

The key growth drivers and prospects are plenty. The inherent strengths include – the state features 64% forest cover, which provides ample leaf litter and natural biomass for traditional farmyard manure. There is biodiversity resilience: Traditional systems like Barahnaja (intercropping 12 distinct crops) provide natural pest resistance, enrich soil health, and insulate small farmers against climate risks.

In the present, there is also policy backing – programmes like the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) and the ‘Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana’ (PKVY) actively finance cluster formations, training, and Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) certifications.

Another emergent factors is Agri-Tourism Convergence. The Uttarakhand government is actively integrating traditional organic and natural farm clusters with rural homestays and eco-tourism. This linkage enables farmers to sell value-added products directly to tourists at a premium. There is also a booming export and domestic demand for mountain-grown cash crops, particularly medicinal herbs (ashwagandha, kutki), aromatic plants, pulses, and organic millets.

However, there exist major challenges to scalability that government must note. Experts point out that the high labour and topography constraints. Rugged, steep mountain terrains restrict mechanisation, driving up physical labour costs. There are also climate vulnerabilities, such as being experienced at present. Severe land degradation, erratic monsoon rains, cloudbursts, and frequent landslides cause topsoil erosion and destroy step farms.

The supply chain gaps also need to be addressed. Remote, disconnected hill villages lack robust cold-chain logistics, processing centres, and direct market access, leading to post-harvest losses. There is the long-term out-migration problem. Declining farm returns historically led to massive youth migration to the plains, leaving many step farms entirely deserted.

The strategic solutions needing to be implemented are, however, available. There is need for micro-weather infrastructure – replicating data-driven models, such as the climate-smart school and micro-weather station project in Tipli (Tehri Garhwal), helps farmers alter sowing schedules according to localised climate shifts. Scaling up Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Common Facility Centres (CFCs) helps small farmers aggregate volumes, lower transport overheads, and access high-value urban markets collectively. Experts also underline the need for enhancing extension work on localised bio-inputs—like Jeevamrit, Ghanajeevamrit, and botanical pest repellents (Neemastra, Dashparni), which bridge the awareness gap for standard yields.

The problems are there but the returns following innovative solutions will be more than worthwhile.
