‘AI, Civil engineering synergy is basis of smart infrastructure’

Global conference at Graphic Era

DEHRADUN, 12 Sep: Experts from 20 countries at Graphic Era unanimously emphasized that the synergy between AI and civil engineering will shape the new direction of smart infrastructure in the coming years. Civil engineers will need to develop proficiency in AI and smart technologies to build safer and cost-effective infrastructure based on data and modern technologies.
Addressing the valedictory session of the two-day international conference on smart infrastructure at Graphic Era Deemed University on Saturday, Scientist at the Regional Research Station, Bathinda Anurag Malik said that the future of civil engineering is no longer limited to bricks, concrete and steel, as AI and smart technologies are transforming the field. He said civil engineers need to develop the ability to work with AI to create modern infrastructure with smart design, enhanced safety, efficient use of resources and reduced costs.
Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era Deemed University, Narpinder Singh emphasized the need for climate-resilient infrastructure and said that infrastructure planning and design should not focus only on present conditions, but also take into account future climate change and related challenges. He said reducing carbon emissions, water conservation and efficient use of natural resources should be given priority in infrastructure development.
Professor at MNNIT Prayagraj, Anupam Rawat, and Tiyasha of Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam, also addressed the conference.
The conference was attended by 150 participants from 20 countries, including Italy, Liberia, Malaysia, Switzerland, the United States, the UK and Vietnam. A total of 110 research papers were presented during the two-day conference on topics including sustainable flood mitigation, carbon footprint assessment, construction safety and predictive maintenance of smart infrastructure.
The conference was jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering and Centre for Promotion of Research of Graphic Era Deemed University, and the University of Surrey. HOD, KK Gupta, Convenor Deepak Kumar Singh, Organizing Secretaries, Karan Singh and Rahul Vaishnav, along with faculty members and students, were also present.
