VOW & Doon Varsity host Q/Fs of 2nd Gaura Devi National Debate on Human Rights

Dehradun, 28 Nov: In a collaborative effort between Valley of Words and Vatsalya Club, Cultural Committee of Doon University, and sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission, the Quarter Finals of the 2nd Edition of the ‘Gaura Devi National Debate on Human Rights’ were successfully organized.

The event, which took place in an online format, was hosted in the Conference Room of the Nityanand Building at Doon University, here.

The quarter finals saw student participants from across India, who had been carefully selected through a rigorous online elimination round under the leadership of Dr Aditi Bist, Faculty Coordinator, Vatsalya Club, and the support of Sneha Kothiyal and Sanjana Juyal, convener and co convener, Vatsalya.

Initially, the Vatsalya Club received an impressive 108 entries, from which 25 participants for the English Debate and 19 for the Hindi Debate were selected.

The topic of the debate, “Human Rights cannot be Extended to Propagators of Violence”, sparked compelling discussions among the participants, who brought diverse perspectives to the table. The judges included Dr Rashi Mishra, Assistant Professor at the School of Media and Communication Studies, Shubhra Kukreti, Head of the Department of French at the School of Languages, and Dr Swati Bisht, Associate Professor at the School of Management Studies, who presided over the English debate. Meanwhile, the Hindi debate was adjudicated by Dr Nitin Kumar, Assistant Professor at the School of Media and Communications, Dr Ajeet Panwar from the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts, and Dr Abhilasha Kannaujia from the Department of Geography.

Eight candidates, each, from, both, English and Hindi categories were selected for the semi-finals.

Aman Bharadwaj and Komal Soun did an excellent job in conducting the event.

The Department of Media and Communication Studies, under the leadership of Dr Nitin Kumar,

played a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless execution of the live event. Their efforts were instrumental in bringing together this intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking platform, fostering meaningful discussions on human rights issues.
