Dehradun, 1 Aug: Sitar player Rabin Karmakar, working in the Music Section of Akashvani Dehradun, has been upgraded to top grade artist category in classical music (sitar playing) by the Directorate General of Akashvani.

Born in Kolkata, Rabin Karmakar started learning sitar from his father, Nakul Karmakar, at a very young age. Later, he learned the nuances of sitar from Pandit Vishwanath Chatterjee and then Pandit Shyamal Chatterjee and acquired knowledge of various ragas.

Karmakar has delighted music lovers with his sitar playing on various platforms across the country. On 27 July, 1995, Rabin Karmakar started his career as a staff artist at Akashvani Najibabad and, from 2017, he has been serving at Akashvani Dehradun. He was awarded ‘A’ grade in sitar playing in the year 2013. According to the tradition of Akashvani, he has now received the title of Pandit.

The top grade is the highest grade given by Akashvani in the field of music. It is worth noting that Rabin Karmakar is the first sitar player from Uttarakhand state to receive the top grade category from Akashvani.
