Dehradun, 13 Nov: On the fourth day of the ‘Yuva Mahotsav’, an extensive session was conducted by the Youth Welfare and Prantiya Rakshak Dal (PRD), at which sports experts discussed the importance of nutrition and health conditioning to enhance athletes’ performance. This session was particularly relevant in raising awareness about sports science, with a focus on the upcoming National Games to be hosted by Uttarakhand.
The keynote speaker, Geetha Ghaliyavar, emphasised that athletes need higher energy levels during intense training periods. She advised athletes to consume less fat during training, as it takes longer to digest. Carbohydrates and proteins are essential for energy, while Omega-3 and Vitamin D are crucial for athletes. Vitamin B12 also plays a vital role in providing energy.
Furthermore, Ghaliyavar recommended that athletes should get 8 to 9 hours of sleep daily and suggested limited use of caffeine to enhance performance. She stressed that athletes should only consume dope-free supplements.
Dr Anilendu Pramanik highlighted the significance of biomechanics in sports. He explained that, in earlier times, biomechanics was challenging to understand, but with modern tools, it has become much easier. Awareness of biomechanics in athletes has also increased, and it plays a crucial role in strength and conditioning.
The primary aim of these expert sessions was to raise awareness of various aspects of sports science and prepare the public and athletes for the National Games.
