Dehradun, 4 Dec: The state government has again granted relief from eviction to the slum dwellers in the state, particularly in Dehradun. The Governor has approved the Uttarakhand (Special Provisions for Municipal Bodies and Authorities) Ordinance-2024. With this, the threat of being displaced from the settlements has been averted for the next three years again. Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh granted approval to the ordinance in this regard yesterday.
It may be recalled that following the orders of the High Court in 2018, the slum dwellers settled under the limits of the municipal bodies were facing threat of eviction. However, state government had brought the first ordinance in 2018, which gave relief to the slum dwellers for three years. In 2021, the government again brought the ordinance, whose term ended in October this year.
Now the government has yet again come up with the ordinance for the third time, which will be valid till 2027. This ordinance had been promulgated by Dhami Government recently. With this, more than 12 lakh people of 582 settlements have got great relief. At the same time, the government also claims to be working on the rehabilitation and regularisation of slums.
