DEHRADUN, 7 Dec: Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhyay has been advocating for the issues caused by the construction of Tehri Dam on the environment of the region. He has urged Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal to present a claim for the Bhagirathi Bhilangana Valley under the new United Nations policy to get aid to deal with the pressing issues in this regard. He emphasised the need to address the environmental, ecological and other damages caused by the Tehri Dam construction.
Upadhyay highlighted that, under the Loss and Damage Fund established by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Uttarakhand can receive an aid of around Rs 12,000 crore. He has called for sustainable action on issues such as the Bhagirathi Valley’s ecological sequence, including melting glaciers, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic impacts, which illustrate the effects of climate change.
The BJP MLA believes that adopting sustainable practices, promoting community-driven conservation, and integrating environmental considerations into development plans can mitigate these impacts and ensure the region’s resilience. He stressed upon the importance of collaboration among policy-makers, researchers, and local communities to safeguard the Valley’s unique heritage and ecological balance for future generations. Upadhyay has also urged the state Chief Secretary to take relevant action in this matter.
