Dehradun, 17 Jan: The Central Library of Uttaranchal University is holding a two-day National Workshop on ‘Developing and Managing Institutional Repositories Using DSpace’ on 17-18 January.
This event brought together students, research scholars, and library professionals to delve into the innovative use of DSpace as a platform for digitisation and digital repository management.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Dharam Buddhi, Vice Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, who was the Chief Guest. Other dignitaries and speakers also attended the ceremony. Dr Ramveer Tanwar, University Librarian and Workshop Coordinator, welcomed all the dignitaries and provided an overview of the workshop’s objectives and agenda.
In his inaugural address, Prof Dharam Buddhi highlighted the importance of integrating open-source software like DSpace into libraries to foster digitisation and enhance accessibility to knowledge resources. He also emphasised the need for libraries to adapt to evolving technological trends to stay relevant and efficient in the modern era. Prof Buddhi addressed myths surrounding technology and urged participants to embrace innovative solutions for library management and digital asset handling.
Dr DP Tripathi, the prominent workshop resource person, underscored the significance of DSpace in the digitisation process. He conducted hands-on sessions, enabling participants to gain practical knowledge about the implementation, customisation, and management of digital repositories using DSpace. These sessions offered valuable insights into digital asset management and repository creation, enriching the participants’ learning experience.
Over 40 attendees are participating in this workshop, including students, research scholars, and library professionals from various states such as Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. Organising Secretary Arun Singh Thakur, Senior Grade Librarian, along with the library staff of Uttaranchal University, ensured the event’s smooth execution. The diverse representation of participants underscored the workshop’s broad appeal and the growing importance of digitization in library science.
The first day of the event concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Mukhtendra Rawat, Librarian of Law College Dehradun (LCD). Dr Bushra Aziz, Resident Medical Officer (RMO), Uttaranchal Medical College of Ayurveda & Research, moderated the workshop.
