Dehradun, 8 Feb: A young woman was found dead allegedly by suicide in Paradise Hotel, Jolly Grant, yesterday. The incident came to light when hotel manager Manoj Kumar informed the police after the woman locked herself inside Room 107 and did not respond for an extended period.
According to the manager, on the night of 6 February, Prashant Kumar Patel (24), a resident of Allahabad and currently living in Bhaniyawala, Doiwala, had checked into the hotel with the deceased. Both had submitted their identity documents. The next morning, they checked out together, but later, the woman returned alone, claiming she had left some belongings in the room. She entered and locked the door from inside.
When she failed to respond, hotel staff alerted the Jolly Grant Police Outpost. A police team arrived and, with the help of hotel employees, broke open the door, only to find the woman had hanged herself from the ceiling fan using a bedsheet.
The deceased’s family was traced, revealing that two of her aunts lived in the Jolly Grant area. They were informed, and her grandfather, residing in Ranipokhri, arrived with legal representatives. He stated that the deceased’s father, currently in Bengaluru, would arrive in Dehradun by evening. The family requested that no Panchayat Nama or post-mortem be conducted until his arrival.
Police have seized the hotel’s DVR and examined CCTV footage, which confirms that the woman had checked in with Patel on the night of 6 February and left with him the next morning. She was later seen returning alone before the incident. No third person was found to have accompanied them.
According to SSP, Dehradun, Ajai Singh, preliminary investigations indicate suicide. The room was found locked from the inside and had to be forcibly opened by hotel staff and police. The body has been placed in the mortuary at Himalaya Jolly Grant Hospital, while Patel has been taken into custody for questioning. No formal complaint has been filed by the family yet, and further action will depend on their statement.
Meanwhile, authorities have warned against the spread of false or misleading information on social media. Efforts are underway to identify and take strict legal action against those attempting to incite unrest.
