Nainital, 14 Feb: Senior Advocate Alok Mehra was today sworn in as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court. The swearing-in ceremony was organised at the Uttarakhand High Court where Chief Justice Narender G administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed judge.
It may be recalled that Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had shared the news of Alok Mehra’s appointment as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court on his X account late on Wednesday evening.
Senior Justices Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Ravindra Maithani, Alok Kumar Verma, Rakesh Thapliyal, and Pankaj Purohit were among those present at the swearing-in ceremony. In addition, office- bearers of the Bar Association, including the Registrar General and all advocates of the High Court, were also present.
Advocate Alok Mehra has been practicing in the High Court since its establishment. Born in Nainital in February 1972, Justice Mehra’s late father, Gopal Singh Mehra, was also a well-known advocate. Justice Mehra completed his high school education at St Joseph’s College, Nainital. He later attended Government Inter College, Nainital, for his intermediate education and then MBPG College, Haldwani, for his graduation and post-graduation. He received his law degree in 1998 from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Alok Mehra’s appointment as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court in October 2023. This matter had been pending for 15 months. On 12 February, after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, the orders were issued to appoint him as a judge.
