Haridwar, 20 Feb: Former Khanpur MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion, accused of firing outside the current Khanpur MLA Umesh Kumar’s office, will have to stay in jail for another 14 days. The court has extended Champion’s judicial custody for another 14 days. Currently, he is admitted in Haridwar District Hospital. Due to ill health, Pranav Singh Champion could not appear in court today.

Champion’s lawyer Gopal Chaturvedi shared with the media that his client Champion was to appear in Haridwar court today. A decision was to be taken regarding his custody in this hearing, but due to ill health, he could not appear in court. The court has extended his judicial custody for another 14 days.

It may be recalled that the current MLA from Khanpur, Umesh Kumar had reached the Palace of Champion in Landhaura and allegedly threatened the former MLA. In retaliation, on the evening of 29 January, Champion reached Khanpur MLA Umesh Kumar’s office with his supporters. It is alleged that during this time Champion opened fire at the office of MLA Umesh Kumar and allegedly misbehaved with the staff. Soon after this incident, Umesh Kumar was also publicly seen brandishing his gun and also threatening Champion, the video of which had gone viral.

While the police arrested Champion from Dehradun on the same day and presented him in Haridwar court on the next day which sent him to 14 day judicial custody. At the same time, the Doiwala court granted bail to Umesh Kumar who even went abroad after securing the bail, something which has been criticised by the Uttarakhand High Court.

Champion was sent to Haridwar jail. On 15 February, Champion’s health deteriorated in jail, after which Champion was admitted to District Hospital Haridwar. Since then, Champion is admitted in the hospital.

Regarding Champion’s health, Haridwar District Hospital’s acting CMS Dr Vikasdeep said that surgeon Dr Pranav Pratap of Roorkee Government Hospital has also been included in the panel of doctors. Now a panel of four doctors is examining Champion’s health. Some tests of Champion have been done, whose report has not come yet. Something further can be said only after the report comes.
