Dehradun, 23 Apr: The dense forests of Uttarakhand have been long vulnerable to devastating fires each summer. Forest fires not only wreak havoc on the environment but also endanger wildlife and local communities. However, some fresh initiatives are now being considered to take advantage of advanced technology to prevent and manage forest fires in the state. The state forests are now poised to benefit from technological advancements. In an innovative approach, the Forest Department is developing a cutting-edge Prediction Model based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to foresee potential fire outbreaks and mitigate risks well in time.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) Forest Fires, Nishant Verma has shared that this smart technical system will analyse historical fire data, weather patterns, geographical conditions, and previous incident trends to determine when and where a fire is most likely to occur. The system will also issue warnings before a blaze ignites, allowing authorities to prepare in advance.
He shared that the Forest Department has established the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), which houses fire-related data spanning the last decade. This database contains detailed records of regions that witness recurring fires, the severity of past incidents, and vulnerable forest areas. The Prediction Model integrates these insights with AI technology to improve forecasting accuracy.
Using this advanced system, the department will identify high-risk zones beforehand, and ensure the pre-deployment of additional resources, personnel, and fire-prevention equipment. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the devastation caused by forest fires across Uttarakhand.
Verma remarked that the Prediction Model represents a major leap forward in forest conservation. AI-driven analytics will enhance preparedness by offering precise predictions, allowing authorities to focus preventive measures where they are most needed. The integration of AI and data analytics is anticipated to be a milestone in protecting Uttarakhand’s verdant landscapes.
