Dehradun, 13 Aug: Sardar Bhagwan Singh University celebrated a proud moment as Dr Deepa Mishra Thapliyal, a faculty member and NCC Caretaker at the university, was formally commissioned as a Lieutenant in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The pipping ceremony, held on 11 August at the 11 UK NCC Battalion, Dehradun, was conducted with full honour and enthusiasm by Commanding Officer Col AK Paul, Major Shashi Mehta, and Subedar Major Laxman.

Prof (Dr) Gaurav Deep Singh, President of SBS University, praised Dr Thapliyal’s achievement, calling it “a reflection of her dedication and leadership qualities, which inspire the entire university community”. Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) J Kumar commended her “commitment to academic excellence and service to the nation,” and wished her continued success in her new role.

Lt Dr Thapliyal’s association with the NCC began in 2004 as a cadet with the 11 UK NCC Girls Battalion, where she earned the prestigious ‘C’ certificate. Appointed as NCC Caretaker at SBS University in November 2024, her dedication over the past year led to her commissioning as an Associate NCC Officer (ANO).

This milestone also marks SBS University’s regaining of a Senior Wing Associate NCC Officer after several years, adding significance to the achievement. Recently, six of its NCC cadets from the 11 UK Battalion successfully cleared the prestigious Inter-Group Competition (IGC) exam, further underscoring the growing strength and performance of the university’s NCC unit.

The achievement of Dr Thapliyal has been received with great happiness and pride across the SBSU community, with students, faculty, and staff alike celebrating her success as a collective honour for the university. Her journey stands as a testament to perseverance, discipline, and the values of the NCC, inspiring cadets and students across the university
