Dehradun, 31 Aug: A press conference was held today in Dehradun to announce an initiative aimed at preserving and promoting Uttarakhand’s native languages – Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari – through Artificial Intelligence (AI). The project seeks to connect present and future generations with their mother tongues and keep them alive in the digital era.
On this occasion, AI Architect Sachidanand Semwal stated, “This initiative will prove to be a milestone for our regional languages. Future generations will now be able to speak, write, and learn in Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari using AI tools like ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini.” He also shared detailed insights about the technical preparations underway for this project.
As part of this initiative, a robust and authentic dataset will be developed with the collaboration of language and cultural scholars, which will then be used to train AI models.
Padma Shri awardee Pritam Bharatwan, through his Jagar and Dhol Sagar Academy, will contribute to linguistic authenticity and cultural preservation. Meanwhile, Sachidanand Semwal, with over 23 years of expertise in software, cloud, and AI—including four years of specialised work in Generative AI in the US—will lead the overall technical framework, AI training, and dataset development.
For administrative coordination and guidance, Mastu Das, Shakti Prasad Bhatt, and KS Chauhan will play active roles.
The project has already been formally initiated, and the team has received positive support and approval from the Chief Minister, the Minister for Languages Subodh Uniyal, and the Language Secretary. Soon, Uttarakhand’s mother tongues will be accessible on AI-powered chat models.
The key contributors include Pritam Bharatwan – Jagar & Dhol Sagar Academy; Sachidanand Semwal – AI Architect; Shakti Prasad Bhatt – Administrative & Implementation Support; Mastu Das – Administrative & Implementation Support; KS Chauhan – Administrative & Implementation Support.
