Dehradun, 21 May: A group of 16 MSc, Clinical Research & Epidemiology, students of SRH University Dehradun accompanied by two faculty members, Dr Nikku Yadav and Dr Manisha Sharma, paid an industrial visit to the Himalaya Wellness Company Dehradun Unit here, today, to get industrial exposure on Pharma Research.
They visited the premises, museum, and pharmacy manufacturing area and saw a film on HWC. While interacting with the President Dr S Farooq, they were told that clinical research refers to all research carried out on human beings. It focuses on the study of drug development, clinical trials, ethical and regulatory affairs, and every research has positive or negative effects. For example, fruits are well-known for their benefits, but research has found that after the age of 60 years, one should avoid certain fruits like apples, pears, mangoes and watermelon.
It has been found after research that all the above fruits are relatively high in natural sugar and may contribute to fluctuation in diabetic cases. Grapes can interfere with the effectiveness of some medicines for high BP, anxiety and insomnia. Some fruits like Banana are high in Potassium and excessive intake of it can be dangerous to the health of senior citizens.
In accordance with Ayurveda, in existence for thousands of years, Chayavanprash was used for senior citizens which contains sugar. Now Geriforte is produced by HWC which is without sugar keeping in view needs of the patients, hence research is desirable.
He added that AI can help in clinical trials of design and reduce the normal expensive experiments. He advised the students to undertake innovation in this highly specialised field.
At the end, Dr N Yadav, I/C Chief Research at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, thanked Dr S Farooq for his valuable guidance and hospitality.
