Dehradun, 26 Jun: An awareness programme was organised today at the Police Lines, here, to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. During the programme, dignitaries and officers present sensitised students and other participants about the causes, harmful effects, and preventive measures related to drug abuse.
Addressing the gathering, V Murugesan, Additional Director General of Police (Crime & Law & Order), emphasised that drug abuse is spreading like a curse in society. He stressed the need for timely action to protect future generations. He urged people from all sections of society to actively participate in anti-drug campaigns and keep themselves as well as those around them away from drugs. He also highlighted the crucial role of families in preventing youth from falling into the trap of addiction. He called upon parents to maintain friendly relations with their children so that the latter can share their problems and doubts openly, as loneliness and depression often lead youth towards substance abuse.
Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Anil Joshi also addressed the participants and remarked that people today are losing moral values and drifting away from family relationships, choosing isolation instead, which often pushes them towards addiction. He emphasised that eradicating drugs is not the sole responsibility of the police — families, every section of society, and all other stakeholders must come together to realise the vision of a drug-free society.
During the programme, the Superintendent of Police (City), Dehradun, shared detailed information about the campaigns run by the police for drug eradication and the actions taken against drug traffickers. An interactive session was held at which dignitaries addressed the queries of participants regarding drug de-addiction and eradication measures.
Prominent attendees included V Murugesan (Additional Director General of Police, Crime & Law & Order), Dr Anil Joshi, AB Lal (Retired DGP), Nilesh Anand Bharane (Inspector General of Police, Crime & Law & Order), Rajeev Swaroop (Inspector General, Garhwal Range), Savin Bansal (District Magistrate, Dehradun), Ajay Singh (Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun), Girish Chandra Pancholi (Joint Director, Law), Meena Bisht (District Probation Officer), Colonel Deepak Pandey (Commanding Officer, NCC Battalion), Lalit Joshi (Chairman, CIMS), Manmohan Kandwal (President, Bar Association), Surekha Dangwal (VC, Doon University), RJ Kavya (FM Radio), Dr Akhil Chopra (Psychologist), Sangeeta Kain (Principal, Welham Boys), Sudheev Badola (Registrar, HIT College), Major Premlata Verma (Red Cross Society, Dehradun), OP Manocha (former Scientist, DRDO), along with retired senior officers of police and administration, NCC cadets, office-bearers of various institutions, and other distinguished individuals.
