Dehradun, 26 May: In a significant development in Uttarakhand politics, a CBI court today sentenced BJP MLA Adesh Chauhan to imprisonment along with three police personnel. A total of five individuals have been convicted for assault in police custody. The case is related to allegations that the MLA, along with his niece, had filed a false case of dowry harassment against the husband of his niece and then had, with the help of certain police officials, assaulted him.
The political circles in Uttarakhand are abuzz with the news that the CBI court has sentenced BJP MLA Adesh Chauhan to imprisonment. The case, which involved alleged assault while in police custody, had been undergoing trial in the CBI court for a considerable period. Three police personnel were also convicted in connection with the same case, though one of them had passed away earlier.
Adesh Chauhan, who represents the Ranipur Assembly constituency in Haridwar district, was accused of assaulting his niece’s husband, Manish. Manish had filed a complaint regarding the matter. Following his complaint, the Uttarakhand High Court had handed over the investigation to the CBI.
Crucially, the CBI investigation confirmed the validity of the facts presented in Manish’s complaint. The CBI court, acknowledging these facts, delivered its verdict. Besides BJP MLA Adesh Chauhan, his niece Deepika and four others, including the three police personnel (one deceased), were convicted by the CBI court. This verdict has sent ripples through the state’s political landscape, underscoring the legal system’s stance on accountability for public representatives and law enforcement officials.
Politics apart, this case also reflects how an increasing number of false dowry harassments are being filed these days forcing the victims even to commit suicide in certain cases.
