Dehradun, 25 Jun: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today observed the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as ‘Constitution Murder Day’ across Uttarakhand, in line with its nationwide campaign to mark what it describes as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy.

Addressing party workers, State BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt reminded that 25 June 1975 marked a grave betrayal of constitutional values, when fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was crushed, and scores of political leaders, social activists, students and ordinary citizens were imprisoned.  He further asserted that the then Congress government did not merely impose Emergency; it virtually arrested democracy and throttled the voice of the Constitution.

On this occasion, Bhatt also emphasised the need to educate every generation about the excesses committed during the Emergency to ensure that the principles enshrined in the Constitution are never compromised again. He stressed that this day must serve as a constant reminder that democracy must never again be held hostage to political ambitions.

He added that the BJP was conducting programmes at the assembly constituency level throughout the state to pay tribute to all those who bravely resisted the Emergency and stood in defence of democratic values. He claimed that by honouring these soldiers of democracy, the party seeks to alert and awaken the current generation to the fragility of freedom and the importance of upholding the Constitution.

Bhatt further criticised the Congress, alleging that despite its waning political strength, the party still functions with a mindset reminiscent of 1975.  He remarked that the Congress leadership and governance style remains fundamentally autocratic, even today. The BJP leaders reiterated the party’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and working towards a developed and inclusive India. He stated that while the BJP Government is achieving significant milestones of progress, it will not allow the memories of 1975 to fade from national consciousness.
