Dehradun, 7 Oct: Angry with the continuously deteriorating law and order situation in Dehradun, a Congress delegation, led by senior vice president of the state Congress, Suryakant Dhasmana, met the state Chief Secretary, Anand Bardhan, at his office in the secretariat on Wednesday and expressed its displeasure and submitted a memorandum demanding that the police in the state should be made accountable in case of crime occurring at outpost, police station, circle and district level.

In the memorandum submitted to the Chief Secretary, Dhasmana said that since the beginning of this year, there has been a flood of criminal incidents in the capital Dehradun.

Dhasmana said that the murder of a youth at 10 a.m. in front of the Press Club in Parade Ground, murder of a youth in a shootout at around 10 a.m. in Silver City Mall, a few steps away from the SSP’s bungalow on Rajpur Road, murder of a retired Brigadier in the crossfire of a gang war in Johri village, murder of a young woman by slitting her throat with a chopper in Paltan Bazaar early in the morning, robbery in the house of BJP councillor Amita Singh this month after feeding intoxicants to her entire family in the food and now the heinous and gruesome triple murder that took place on Tuesday in Vishnu Lok under Raipur police station, are among major criminal incidents.

Dhasmana said that, due to these incidents, the picture of law and order situation in the entire capital region is clearly visible on the wall and seeing this, the people of the capital Dehradun are terrified.

He said that these incidents are having the greatest impact on senior citizens who live alone. Dhasmana added that it’s also important to note that criminals from the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh also make Dehradun their refuge because of weak policing here, and then, after a major crime, it’s discovered that a notorious criminal from another state was operating here with ease.

Dhasmana stated that he has clearly requested the Chief Secretary to direct the state Home Department and Police Department to hold officers at the outpost, police station, circle, and district levels accountable for any heinous crime. Furthermore, the police should take special care of the safety of senior citizens living in each police station area.

The delegation also met the state’s Director General, Police, Deepam Seth, at 5 p.m. and submitted a memorandum on the same issue. Dhasmana demanded that the DGP improve his police system and alleviate the fear of the people of Dehradun at all costs. DGP Seth assured the Congress delegation that he would personally monitor the issue with utmost seriousness and priority.

The delegation included State Congress Labour Department President Dinesh Kaushal, former State General Secretary Jagdish Dhiman and former State Vice President, Youth Congress, Sumit Khanna.
