Corruption is biggest challenge to nation-building: Gov

Dehradun, 28 Jan: Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) today participated in a seminar on the theme “Youth Against Corruption – Causes and Prevention of Corruption”, organised by the Vigilance Establishment, Uttarakhand, at the Lok Bhawan, here.

On the occasion, he described corruption as the biggest challenge to nation-building and called for a decisive fight against it.

Former administrative officers, retired senior officials, academicians, and youth actively took part in the seminar. The participants shared their views on the causes of corruption, its social impact, and measures for its prevention. Special emphasis was laid on the role of youth, public awareness, transparent governance, and the effective use of technology during the discussions.

The Governor stated that corruption is the greatest challenge in the process of nation-building and that collective efforts are essential to eliminate it. He said that unless there is a change in the mindset of both the giver and the taker, systemic improvement is not possible.

Praising the seminar organised by the Vigilance Department and the Police Administration, the Governor said that initiatives such as e-governance, technology-driven systems, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) have increased transparency and reduced the role of middlemen. He also emphasised the need to increase the rate of punishment for those found guilty of corruption.

The Governor said that to achieve the goal of a Developed India by 2047 under the leadership of the Prime Minister, it is imperative to take strong action against corruption. Describing corruption as a major obstacle to development, he said it is a serious problem that must be eradicated at its roots.

Appreciating the firm decisions taken against corruption in Uttarakhand, the Governor said that strict action has been taken in corruption-related cases in recent years. He called upon the youth to adopt honesty, transparency, and accountability in their lives and to take a pledge not to tolerate corruption.

The discussion featured participation from JS Pandey, former Director General of Police; Kumkum Rani, former Judge; Bipin Chandra, former Chief Information Commissioner; Yogesh Kumar Dev, Information Commissioner; JS Virk, Deputy Advocate General/Advocate, High Court; and DS Mann, Chairman, Doon International School.

On this occasion, the Director General of Police, Deepam Seth; Director, Vigilance, V Murugesan; DIG, Vigilance, Prahlad Narayan Meena; Dhirendra Gunjiwal, along with other officers and students from various schools, were also present.
