Dehradun, 9 Sep: In a significant leap forward, Dehradun Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam) has secured the 19th position in the Clean Air Survey conducted under the National Clean Air Programme, the results of which were announced today. The city registered a score of 171.7, marking a notable improvement from its previous rank of 37th and score of 126.5 in the 2024 assessment.
Commenting on the achievement, Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal claimed that over the past six to eight months, the Municipal Corporation has undertaken a series of targeted initiatives aimed at improving ambient air quality across the city. These include the development of multiple parks and the plantation of one lakh trees throughout the municipal limits, contributing to enhanced green cover and natural dust suppression. She also claimed that dedicated cycle tracks have been constructed to promote non-motorised transport and reduce vehicular emissions. Officials claimed that to further mitigate the dust pollution, dividers have been installed along both sides of major roads, and footpaths have been built to streamline pedestrian movement.
In a bid to strengthen waste management in congested areas, the Corporation has procured 15 e-auto tipper vehicles for door-to-door garbage collection in narrow lanes. Additionally, ten compost machines have been installed to convert wet waste into usable compost, thereby reducing landfill dependency. A fountain has also been constructed at the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), serving as a dust control measure in the vicinity.
In addition, the officials remind that public awareness campaigns were also actively conducted to sensitise citizens about air quality and environmental responsibility. They asserted that the Municipal Corporation continues to deploy sprinkler machines across city roads to suppress airborne particulate matter, ensuring sustained efforts towards cleaner air.
Commenting on the development, Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal expressed their commitment to further elevate the performance of the Nigam and they said that the corporation aims to secure a position among the top five cities in the next Clean Air Survey cycle.
