Dehradun, 30 Nov: On the day of his retirement as DGP, Uttarakhand, Ashok Kumar was accorded a warm farewell by the Police Department at the Police Lines here today.

DGP Ashok Kumar retired today after a long three-year tenure as DGP. A grand farewell ceremony was organised for him at the Police Lines. A ceremonial parade was also held on the occasion. The ceremonial parade was led by Sarvesh Panwar, SP Traffic, Dehradun, along with Second in Command Ashish Bhardwaj, DSP, Premnagar, and Parade Adjutant Niharika Semwal, DSP, Haridwar.

While speaking at his farewell function, Kumar became emotional. He thanked everyone concerned for organising the farewell function and said that this was the last day of his police service of more than 34 years and the last day when he would be donning his police uniform. Among the most important things that he mentioned about his tenure as a Police Officer and especially as the DGP, he said it had been his priority to reduce the ‘distance’ between the people and the Police. He reminded that, when he took charge as DGP, the state was faced with the challenge of Covid but the state and the police force faced the challenge boldly. Kumar also emphasised that the Police Department gave him many opportunities to serve the people and during this many challenges were also encountered.

Newly appointed Acting DGP of Uttarakhand Abhinav Kumar said at the ceremony that he wished to thank the government and the Chief Minister for showing confidence in him. He asserted that being the DGP of a state is a big responsibility. He reminded that he has been working here since 1999. When Uttarakhand was formed, he was an ASP. Therefore, it is a matter of pride for him, that the police force that was formed in front of him, now had provided him a chance to lead it. Abhinav Kumar promised that he would try to live up to the expectations.

New DGP Abhinav Kumar also praised outgoing DGP Ashok Kumar and described him as Vishwakarma for the police force in Uttarakhand having played a key role in strengthening the infrastructure.

It may be recalled that Ashok Kumar visited Haridwar, yesterday, a day before retirement. Here various social organisations honoured him for his excellent work in 34 years. He also interacted with the public. After attending Ganga Aarti, he participated in a programme organised at CCR where the Police officers honoured and congratulated him. Ashok Kumar was also honoured on behalf of CRPF, Uttarakhand Sector. The DGP shared his experiences with the soldiers during his stint in the CRPF.
