Dehradun, 11 Feb: The district administration has launched Project ‘Nanda-Sunanda’ to support the education of poor, orphaned, and helpless girls, ensuring they complete graduation and post-graduation as well as obtain skill education. District Magistrate Savin Bansal is spearheading the initiative to make these girls self-reliant by providing financial and institutional support.
A multidisciplinary committee has been formed to ensure a fair and transparent selection process. So far, 30 girls have been identified under the scheme. Formalities regarding enrolment of six girls have been already completed and they will soon receive financial assistance in the form of cheques.
Through this project, girls studying in adverse circumstances will be educated up to a minimum graduation level and linked to employment through skill training. The selection process involves applications received via various government offices, Janata Darshans, multipurpose camps, and surveys conducted by Anganwadi workers. Additionally, girls residing in state-run shelter homes under the District Probation Officer and District Social Welfare Officer will also be considered.
It may be recalled that Bansal had previously implemented this initiative in Nainital, benefiting 60 girls and significantly improving their educational prospects. Now, the initiative aims to fulfil the dreams of many in Dehradun who had to leave school due to financial constraints.
The project will be inaugurated this Saturday, with the first cheque handed over to a beneficiary. The verification process will be conducted by the Child Development Project Officer, ensuring the eligibility of applicants. Once confirmed, the final list will be submitted to the District Programme Officer for approval and financial assistance allocation.
The financial support will cover tuition fees, which will be directly transferred to schools or institutions, while additional expenses for books and uniforms will be sent directly to the girls via online transfers. The re-admission of selected girls will be personally arranged, with schools required to certify their enrolment. Regular quarterly progress reports will also be submitted to the District Programme Officer to monitor the students’ educational progress.
