DEHRADUN, 18 Nov: After issuing several warnings to the companies over negligence in garbage collection, District Magistrate Savin Bansal has taken stringent action in this regard by inviting fresh tenders for garbage collection and disposal in 47 out of 100 wards of Dehradun Nagar Nigam.

On the instructions of District Magistrate-cum-Municipal Administrator Savin Bansal, fresh tenders have been invited for door-to-door garbage collection in 47 wards under Municipal Corporation Dehradun. According to the officials, these measure have been taken as no significant improvement was made in the given time period to improve the performance of the poor garbage collection system in the city despite several warnings issued to the companies over negligence.  Soon, tenders will be invited for door-to-door garbage collection from 26 other wards. The administration has claimed that currently the responsibility of door-to- door garbage collection in 47 wards is with Watergrace Company, while Econ Waste Management handles garbage collection in 26 other wards.

According to Bansal, complaints regarding door-to-door garbage collection were being received for a long time, necessitating this strict stand regarding inviting fresh tenders for door-to-door garbage collection and for maintaining the sanitation and cleanliness in the city.

Heavy penalties have been imposed in recent past on these companies for not carrying out garbage collection work as per the standard norms by Bansal after he took over as the new District Magistrate and the Municipal administrator. However, despite the warnings and the penalties, the company allegedly did not improve its performance, and complaints from the public continued to be received daily. In response, the District Magistrate has invited new companies through tenders for these works.

It has been informed that door-to-door garbage collection work is being withdrawn from Watergrace Company and Econ Waste Management Company. Complaints were being received against both companies, indicating that the garbage collection system was not improving in their areas despite penalties levied on the companies. Warnings were also issued by the Municipal Corporation concerning the dress of employees, ID cards, and fitness of vehicles, but there was no improvement, even in this respect, despite warnings.
