Dehradun, 5 Oct: District Magistrate Savin Bansal has taken fresh initiatives to prevent begging on roads in Dehradun district. Bansal has instructed the deployment of Home Guard jawans at 17 major locations and crossings in the city to curb begging. Home Guard jawans will be deployed at the main intersections of the city on a roster basis.
Following the DM’s order, various departments have sprung into action for an effective curb on begging. The District Probation Officer has been instructed to expedite the process by coordinating with the relevant departments. Home Guard jawans have been deployed at key intersections, including Dilaram Chowk, Bahl Chowk, Sai Mandir Rajpur Road, Ballupur Chowk, ONGC Chowk, Prince Chowk, Tehsil Chowk, Railway Station, Saharanpur Chowk, Rispana Bridge, Vidhan Sabha Tiraha, Kargi Chowk, ISBT, Shimla Bypass, Niranjanpur Sabji Mandi, and Lal Pul (Patel Nagar).
A plan is reportedly being out in place to provide education in a conducive environment to children involved in begging by admitting them to the Intensive Care Centres. To effectively stop begging, the District Magistrate has directed the Labour Department, District Probation Office under the Women Welfare Department, Police, Child Welfare Committee, and Self Help Groups (SHGs) registered with the government to run a joint campaign.
The campaign will include 24-hour patrolling with dedicated vehicles to break the cycle of begging. Children involved in begging will be admitted to the Intensive Care Centre, where they will receive education in an environment similar to that of western schools.
