Dehradun, a town once known for its charm and peaceful environment, now finds itself caught in a whirlwind of unease. What used to be a place where families thrived has turned into a maze of fear and uncertainty. Increasing population pressures have dramatically altered the town’s character, with many individuals—homeless, mentally unwell, or struggling with substance abuse—roaming freely. The streets are teeming with a mix of struggling souls and regular citizens, but the disturbing common thread is a pervasive lack of basic respect and manners among many.
Hints of political motivations—like vote bank considerations—loom in the background, contributing to the town’s growing challenges, though these aren’t openly acknowledged. For those who call Dehradun home, this shift is deeply unsettling. What remains undeniable is the visible rise in disrespect and disregard for communal harmony. Aggressive behaviour, public harassment, and a deteriorating sense of order are becoming the norm.
Safety, once taken for granted, now feels like a luxury. Parents, spouses, and children navigate the town with unease, their sense of security constantly undermined. Incidents of violence or harassment can happen at any moment, making daily life a balancing act of caution. The authorities’ slow response times and the need for calls from influential figures before they act only add to the frustrations of ordinary citizens. Are we expected to apply for arms, hire private security, or live in constant fear for our families’ safety?
This is not the life people envisioned when they invested their hard-earned savings in homes here—homes costing crores of rupees yet offering no sense of security. When stepping out means facing a chaotic world where even basic traffic rules are ignored, and when peaceful coexistence seems like a distant memory, residents are left wondering: Is this the Dehradun we want for ourselves and our children?
The authorities need to take a stronger stance, to identify those who move about unchecked, to provide increased police presence, and to create an environment where civilians can trust that their concerns will be addressed without needing to pull strings. Every person has the right to feel secure in their home and on the streets. It’s time for the leaders of this town to rise to the challenge before the fabric of this community unravels further.
