Abhinav Kumar assumes charge as DGP

Dehradun, 30 Nov: DGP Ashok Kumar retired today after 34 years of service in Police. On the day of his retirement, he handed over the baton to Abhinav Kumar at Police Headquarters here this afternoon. Abhinav Kumar, an IPS officer of 1997 batch assumed charge as the 12th DGP of Uttarakhand. He is also the only police officer to become the DGP with less than 30 years of service in the police department. Abhinav Kumar has been given charge as acting DGP of the state.
While handing over the charge and the baton to Abhinav Kumar, outgoing DGP Ashok Kumar noted that the Uttarakhand Police is now in capable hands.

After assuming the post, the new DGP enumerated the challenges and priorities. He said that the challenge of traffic management is bigger than any heinous crime. Traffic management will be ensured on a war footing, he claimed adding that cybercrime is also a big challenge. He also added that he will also work hard towards curbing drug smuggling in Uttarakhand. Referring to Ankita Bhandari case of Pauri, he said that a special action plan and training is needed to stop crime against women. He also felt that training at constable and sub inspector level will have to be changed. He also listed ensuring free, fair and peaceful general election next year as one of his priorities. He further made it clear that it is not his nature to work with any deadline as big crimes take a long time to be tackled and solved.
