Former Pres Kovind inaugurates Buddhist Conference

Dehradun, 1 April: The International Conference on Theravada Buddhism and Social Engagement was held at Hyatt Centric, Rajpur Road, which marked the beginning of an important conference of dignitaries and Buddhist monks and scholars from 11 countries. The event was inaugurated by former President of India Ram Nath Kovind in the presence of Governor of Uttarakhand Lt-General Gurmit Singh (retd), President of International Theravada Sangha Council Dr Lag Mahanayaka Mahathera and Dr MK Otani
At the event, Kovind shared profound insights into Theravada Buddhism and the transformative power of Vipassana meditation. Former President Kovind explained the timeless wisdom contained in the teachings of Theravada Buddhism, which resonated deeply with the audience and ignited collective reflection on its enduring relevance amid the complexities of modern life.
Kovind‘s address not only highlighted the philosophical underpinnings of Buddhism but also emphasized the practical application of Vipassana meditation in contemporary Indian society. He eloquently articulated the profound impact of this ancient practice in promoting inner peace, clarity of mind and spiritual growth, paving the way for meeting the challenges of the modern world with resilience and equanimity. Besides, former President Kovind also gave information about the historic Bodh Gaya Mahabodhi Tree planted during his tenure at Amrit Udyan.
Apart from underlining the importance of Vipassana meditation, former President Kovind highlighted the significance of the 10-day Vipassana course, and its ability to catalyse profound personal transformation and inner awakening. His encouragement served as a powerful reminder of the accessibility of this practice to individuals from all walks of life, regardless of background or belief. In addition, former President Kovind expressed deep appreciation for the dedicated efforts of Dr MK Otani who is engaged in the preservation and promotion of Buddhist art and culture of India.
In his address, Governor Lt-General Gurmit Singh (Retd) highlighted the profound significance of the teachings of the Buddha, and referred to his extensive travels across Buddhist countries to underline their enduring relevance in contemporary Indian society. Through personal experiences, the Governor unraveled the essence of Buddhist philosophy, elucidating its timeless wisdom and practical applicability in solving the complexities of modern life.
The Governor said that by following the basic principles of Buddha under the guidance of the Mahatmas and Gurus of this religion,  people feel happiness, peace, and self-surrender. The significance of Theravada Buddhism lies in meditation and its impact. The practice of meditation proves to be a guiding door for the followers of this religion to make their lives meaningful and prosperous.
The Guest of Honour Religious Leader, Dr Lag Mahanayaka Mahathera expressed his profound gratitude to Kovind for his unwavering support to Buddhism, recognising his enduring commitment to the promotion and preservation of Indian Buddhism at both national and global platforms.

Dr MK Otani, Chief Organiser and Aki Hito and Anuj Kumar were the co-organisers of the event. Dr Heero Hito and Dr Shalu Nehra were the conveners of the function. The conference served as a symbol of promoting enlightenment, dialogue, and collaboration to promote the enduring values ​​of Theravada Buddhism and their profound relevance in addressing contemporary social challenges. Dr Heero Hito, President of the Younker Historical Research Foundation, delivered the welcome address, setting the stage for an insightful discourse on the interrelationship of Theravada Buddhism and social engagement.
