Golden Jubilee celebration of Garhwal University concludes with felicitation of ‘Achievers’

Dehradun, 1 Dec: The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University concluded in Srinagar with much fanfare on Friday.

On this occasion, as the chief guest, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami delivered his address via online medium. As special guests, MLA Vinod Kandari and Vice Chancellor Prof Annapurna Nautiyal formally inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Established on 1 December, 1973, the University has completed 50 years of existence. Recalling the golden history of these fifty years, a grand ceremony was organised today in the Swami Manmanthan Auditorium of Chauras Campus, in which five agitationists, who played an important role in the movement for the establishment of the university, were felicitated.

The Chief Minister, while paying tribute to the late Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, praised the work of Garhwal University as a Central University. He said that the talent of the Himalayan region is being properly developed by the university and, today, the students are making name for themselves all over the world. He gave a message to the students that there is no limit to ability, capability and hard work, every person can be successful by working hard. The Chief Minister also gave assurances on pending requirements of the University.

Vice Chancellor Prof Nautiyal greeted the Chief Minister and all the guests and recalled the golden history of fifty years. Presenting the progress report of the university, she said that they are proud to felicitated those agitationists and former students who made invaluable contributions to the university.

She added that Indian Himalayan Central University Consortium (IHCUC) is doing remarkable work on research and management of the Indian knowledge tradition and Himalayan cultural heritage in higher education.

On this occasion, MLA, Devprayag, Vinod Kandari, while extending congratulations, said that a lot has changed in the fifty year history of the university. The credit for this went to those who first agitated for its establishment. Recalling his student life, he thanked all the teachers and asked the students to be positive and respect their parents and teachers, only then would they progress in life.

Dr Sunil Nautiyal, an alumnus of the university, Director, GV Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Almora, also guided the students on this occasion. He said there is immense potential in the field of research on the environment and ecology of the Himalayas.

Under ‘Recognition of Contribution’, the University felicitated Kunj Bihari Negi, Krishnanand Maithani, Virendra Kumar Painuli, Manzoor Ahmed Baig and Jagdamba Prasad Raturi for their remarkable contribution.

Five alumni of Garhwal University were also honoured. Under ‘Recognition of Achievements’, the University felicitated the alumni who have achieved great successes in their respective fields after receiving education from the University. These were Rear Admiral Om Prakash Singh Rana (Retd), former Director General, Naval Armament Inspection and former General Manager BrahMos Aerospace, Dr Rajendra Doval, Vice Chancellor, Swami Ram Himalayan University and former Director General, UCOST, Dr Sunil Nautiyal, Director, GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Almora, Prof Wazir Singh Lakra, former Vice Chancellor and Director, ICAR, Central Fisheries Education Institute, Mumbai, and Dr Rekha Uniyal, Founder and Principal of Rainbow Public School, Srinagar and Chauras.

On this occasion, Vice Chancellor of North East Hill University, Sikkim and Manipur Central University, Pro Vice Chancellor of Garhwal University Prof RC Bhatt, Program Coordinator Prof YP Raivani, Registrar Dr Dhirendra Kumar Sharma, Dean, Student Welfare, Prof MS Negi, Chief Coordinator Prof BP Naithani, directors of all three campuses, etc., were also present.

An MoU was also signed with seven universities at the meeting of Indian Himalayan Central Universities Consortium. The meeting was presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Annapurna Nautiyal. All the Deans and Heads of Departments of the University were present at this meeting.
