Dehradun, 29 Jun: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) formally launched “Breaking the Glass Ceiling”, the much-anticipated autobiography of Lt General Shakti Gurung (Retd), at an inspiring ceremony held at the Cambrian Hall Auditorium, here, today.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling chronicles the extraordinary journey of the first ethnic Gorkha officer to rise to the highest levels of leadership in the Indian Army. Commissioned into The Grenadiers—a regiment traditionally not associated with Gorkha soldiers—General Gurung rose to become Colonel of the Regiment. He went on to command a frontline Corps along the Line of Actual Control and retired as the Military Secretary at Army Headquarters.

The autobiography is rich with anecdotes, insights, and personal reflections. It not only narrates General Gurung’s own journey through the ranks but also paints a vivid picture of the Gorkha community—their customs, traditions, and enduring contributions to India’s nation-building. The book addresses the identity crisis faced by Indian Gorkhas and delves into historical facets, including the lesser-known exchange of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for Gorkha Regiments by the British during India’s independence.

Having served extensively in Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorism operations in Jammu & Kashmir, India’s North East, and as the Defence Attaché to Myanmar, General Gurung offers a unique perspective on regional and strategic issues often overlooked in military literature. His service in the Military Secretary’s Branch—thrice over—offers valuable lessons in leadership, perseverance, and navigating institutional challenges.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Singh commended General Gurung for his insightful narration and for sharing the hard-earned lessons from a lifetime of service. “This book,” the Governor said, “will not only inspire but also guide the youth, especially those aspiring to serve in the defence forces. I urge all veterans to document and share their experiences—these personal accounts are national assets that can enrich society at large.”

Lt General Shakti Gurung is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Commissioned into The Grenadiers in June 1975, he has held key staff, instructional, and diplomatic appointments during his illustrious career. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Higher Command, and the National Defence College, he retired from service in October 2014 as the Military Secretary, Army HQs.

The book is dedicated “To all Officers, JCOs and Men of my Regiment and specifically my units, 15 and 21 Grenadiers, who stood by me through thick and thin helping me break the glass ceiling.”
