Dehradun, 7 Oct: Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) unveiled the ‘TB Seal’ at the Lok Bhavan here on Wednesday as part of an awareness campaign being conducted by the TB Association of Uttarakhand to increase public awareness about tuberculosis (TB).

On the occasion, the Governor said that efforts by the Health Department or any single organisation alone are not sufficient to eradicate tuberculosis; the active participation of every section of society is essential.

The Governor said that awareness is the most important weapon in the fight against TB. He emphasised the need to make people aware of the symptoms of tuberculosis, timely testing and treatment. He said that public awareness campaigns should be made more effective, particularly in remote and hilly areas, so that no person is deprived of treatment due to a lack of information or healthcare facilities.

The ‘TB Seal’ is issued every year in October by the TB Association of Uttarakhand as part of its public awareness campaign against tuberculosis. The seal is priced at Rs 5 and the funds generated through its sale are utilised by the organisation for TB awareness programmes and other activities in the public interest.

On the occasion, Poonam Kimothi, General Secretary of the TB Association of Uttarakhand, stated that with the support of the Governor, 10 women who had been cured of tuberculosis last year were administered all three doses of the vaccine for prevention of cervical cancer. Sewing machines were also distributed to these women to support their livelihoods. The organisation is also providing Nikshay Poshan Aahar every month to 13 TB patients.
