Dehradun, 1 Jul: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat was among the first state leaders to react to the implementation of new criminal laws across the country with effect from today. Speaking to an electronic news agency today, Rawat said that in respect of the new criminal laws the Congress and the rest of the Opposition had suggested that let the people understand this law before it is implemented but the government is in a hurry to implement the new criminal laws. For this reason, the government did not accept the opposition’s suggestion.

Rawat insisted that it would have been better if the government had accepted the opposition’s suggestion and delayed the implementation of new laws so that people and everyone concerned with the application of thew laws could get time to understand them fully. This would have only helped a better implementation of these laws in the country.

Rawat said that there are many amendments in the new laws which are creating problems. He claimed that he is not questioning the intention of the government and while the intention may be good but that does not mean that the law brought by the government is also good. If the new laws are increasing the problems of the public, then they should be reviewed before implementation.

First case registered in Haridwar under new criminal laws

Haridwar, 1 Jul: The first case in the state has been registered in Haridwar today under the new criminal laws. It may be recalled that criminal laws, namely IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act made during the British era, have been replaced by the new criminal laws with the claimed objective of focussing on justice rather than punishment.

The new laws have become applicable with effect from today across the country. It was in Haridwar today that the first case under the new criminal laws was registered in the state. In the case registered, a person filed a complaint that he was sitting near Ravidas Ghat for some time today when two unknown persons came to him and threatened to kill him by showing a knife and took away his mobile phone and some cash. As per the complaint, these persons also pushed the complainant towards the Ganga River before running away. The Police have registered a case and have begun the investigation.

It may be recalled that, with effect from today, all cases of crimes whether it is murder or robbery, theft or assault, will be registered under the new laws only. In May, training has been given to every field official in the Police Department from the level of police inspectors to the clerks in this regard. However, as the Police officers were well versed in respect of the old laws, they are likely to file cases under changed or amended sections and provisions of the new laws for some time to come.
